Red Cross Shelters Remain Open for Wildfire Evacuees

Oct. 16, 2008

The Red Cross continues to operate shelters for people forced to flee their homes due to the wildfires:

  • San Fernando High School, 1133 O’Melveny Ave., San Fernando
  • Hubert Humphrey Recreation Center, 12560 Fillmore Street, Pacoima, CA 91331

On Oct. 13, with twin wildfires burning in the San Fernando Valley, more than 1,300 people registered at the four American Red Cross of Greater Los Angeles shelters opened for evacuees. Nearly 700 meals were served and 265 residents spent the night at the shelters. Volunteers are also providing mobile feeding to the hundreds of firefighters and first responders working to contain the wildfires.

Information for Evacuees:

Evacuees are encouraged to post “safe and well” messages on the Safe and Well website (https://safeandwell.org).  This public website allows those affected by a disaster to post standard messages about their well-being, and concerned loved ones anywhere can search for the messages posted by those who register. You may also find additional information at www.redcross.org. Those within the disaster affected area without Internet access can call 1-866-GET-INFO for phone-based registration support.

For the most up-to-date information regarding the wildfires, go to http://www.fire.lacounty.gov

If you have questions about social services in the Los Angeles County area, 211 LA County can help. By phone: 211 or (800) 339-6993. Hearing impaired can also dial (800) 660-4026. Access the website at: www.211lacounty.org
