Red Cross volunteers will be pounding the pavement and dancing in the streets in September and October to kick off PrepareLA+ – a campaign aimed at encouraging and empowering Los Angeles area residents to get ready for “the Big One” and other disasters.

The epic hurricane season of 2005 was a defining chapter in American Red Cross history. Five years ago, Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma prompted a response that was unprecedented in size and scope. One of the main lessons learned is that everyone needs to play a role in preparing for disasters.

Ninety dedicated Red Cross volunteers spent Sat., Aug. 21, ensuring that the Red Cross is ready to help disaster evacuees at a moment’s notice when the next wildfire or disaster happens here.

As the superflood in Pakistan continues to move towards the Arabian Sea, its aftermath is only just beginning. The flooding is only the start of a bigger catastrophe that will continue to claim lives.
