Background

Young people have been a part of American Red Cross history and tradition for years. In 1884, six children from Waterford, Pennsylvania decided to put on a play, raised over 50 dollars, and then donated it all to the American Red Cross. These “Little Six” led the way to the formation of the American Junior Red Cross in 1917, under President Wilson. He called upon the youth to support the needs of World War I and began a partnership between the Red Cross and schools nationwide. This partnership has been thriving, ever since, and today young people under the age of 25 make up 35 percent of the American Red Cross volunteers.
