The W. Valley Youth-In-Action is a District Club of the American Red Cross of Greater Los Angeles involving youth members from various high schools throughout the West San Fernando Valley. The ages of our youth members range from 14 to 18 years. Our meetings are typically every other week to discuss, plan and execute various service projects. Our service projects positively impact the community around us and incorporate the American Red Cross mission to help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.
Direct Service Projects
Here are a few of the community service projects we’ve done in the past:
- Children’s Hunger Fund, preparing hygiene kits & food packs for families
- Heal the Bay Beach Clean-ups, preserving our beautiful Malibu coasts
- Operation Gratitude, making care-packs for U.S. Troops serving overseas
- Red Cross Regional Supply Center, restocking supplies for disaster relief
- AIDS Walk Los Angeles, providing water to participants
- Light the Night Walk, supporting the Leukemia Society and its efforts
Community Education Projects
Our youth group is also active in educating the community on disaster preparedness through Community Disaster Education classes, also known as CDE’s
Sesame Street Puppet Show, teaching pre-school students about earthquake preparedness with the help of Elmo and his Sesame Street friends.
Fundraising
Fundraisers are an important way our youth group can help victims of disaster and disease all over the world. These efforts inspire the people in our communities to give monetary contributions and help those in need.
Here are some of our past successful fundraisers:
- International Measles Initiative, raised more than $3,000 for vaccinations
- Wings of Hope Fundraiser, raised more than $1,000 to help tsunami victims
Training
Not only do we plan and execute service projects and activities to give back to the community, but Youth-In-Action members are able to take advantage of training courses sponsored by the American Red Cross.
CPR/First Aid, complimentary certification for all youth group members
YFAST (Youth First Aid Station Team), extensive training that allows our youth members to assist First Aid Responders during the Tournament of Roses Parade
