Eating Fresh: Subway to Provide 350,000 Sandwiches a Day during Catastrophic Disaster

If a devastating earthquake — like the recent quakes in Haiti and Chile — jolts the Los Angeles area, the Red Cross may be faced with serving more than 2 million meals a day to displaced L.A. area residents. Thanks to a newly inked agreement with Subway franchises in Los Angeles County, approximately 300,000 Red Cross disaster shelter residents per day may be eating freshly made Subway sandwiches.

Red Cross Participates in So. Cal. Shakeout Earthquake Exercise

Nov. 13, 2008 — This morning at 10 a.m., a simulated 7.8 earthquake took place along the southern portion of the San Andreas fault, causing loss of life and massive damage to infrastructure throughout the Los Angeles area. In response, 300 trained Greater Los Angeles Red Cross disaster volunteers are participating in the exercise and 10 shelters have been opened around Los Angeles County.
