March 24, 2009 — Once again, Southern California is shaking — this time near the Salton Sea as a swarm of smaller quakes have registered in that area over the past few days. Some fear has been expressed by seismologists that a major earthquake that starts in that area could ripple northwest along the San Andreas Fault, bringing the long anticipated “Big One” to the Los Angeles area.
The “swarm” is just the latest warning for local residents that preparedness for a major disaster is an absolute necessity. Major destruction would, in many cases, prevent those affected from obtaining help for hours or even days. Every household needs to have the supplies family members require to survive. The American Red Cross of Greater Los Angeles recently took a major step toward being ready for a great quake by placing 80 Red Cross Relief Containers at locations throughout the chapter area. Residents need to be ready on their own, however, in case they cannot reach Red Cross locations or other help.
