Free, One Hour “Citizen CPR” Training Offered in July and August

In just one hour,  L.A. area residents learned to save a life by attending the second free, Red Cross ”Citizen CPR” (hands-only CPR) training session on  Sat., Aug. 20.

46 participants of all ages received instruction in hands-only CPR, controlling external bleeding, and managing shock during an emergency.

Four non-certification classes were offered on Saturday at LA84 Foundation/John C. Argue Swim Stadium (Expo Center), in Los Angeles.

In July, free training sessions were held in Glendale and Santa Monica.

More than 100 area residents participated in the first training sessions held on July 23 at the ABC7 Broadcast Center.   One of these attendees was Walmir Herculano, whose CPR class experience had given him the “training and confidence to help” in a fatal automotive accident he witnessed on the freeway only weeks before.

Mr. Herculano and his wife are expecting a child in November and he cites this, along with his experience providing rescue breathing to the victim who sadly did not survive, as a reason for everyone to attend the free CPR training offered by the Red Cross and be prepared to help loved ones in any disaster.

“Having more citizen bystanders trained in these vital skills can help save lives during emergencies,” said Neil Lokuge, Red Cross L.A. Region interim Health and Safety officer.

The free classes averaged over 70 participants per day and were offered through the generous support of Aetna and L.A. Care Health Plan and helped to prepare an . Citizen CPR courses are one component of the “ABCs of a Safe Summer” partnership between the Red Cross L.A. Region and ABC7.

The finale of the ABCs of a Safe Summer Program will be held on Saturday August 27th at the Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatics Center at 13806 La Mirada Blvd. La Mirada, CA 90638 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.  100-200 children will be invited to the ABCs of a Safe Summer Booth and then receive free access to the Buccaneer Bay Water Park.
