Thanks to the generosity of the American public, the Red Cross continues to deliver food, water, health care and relief supplies — including tarps, rope, hygiene kits, water containers and cooking items — to Haitian earthquake survivors. As of March 3, nearly 1.9 million people have received these basic, yet life-sustaining supplies.

More than 600 Red Cross and Red Crescent workers from nearly 40 countries are in Haiti supporting the more than 3,000 Haitian Red Cross volunteers in Port-au-Prince. Each Red Cross Red Crescent society team has its own roles and expertise on the ground.

The American Red Cross has deployed more than 100 people to Haiti, including local resident Steve McAndrew, who briefed Greater Los Angeles Red Cross volunteers and staff members in February about his experiences.

Steve McAndrew (r), a member of the American Red Cross International Services leadership team in Haiti, worked closely with Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies from around the world, including representatives of the Iranian Red Crescent Society.

A member of the American Red Cross International Services team, Steve was one of the first responders to arrive in Haiti. As a relief coordinator, he was responsible for oversseeing the distribution of relief supplies to the urban settlements and surrounding areas where Haitians have lived since the quake.

McAndrew said that working with Red Cross representatives from around the world who speak different languages and have different disaster response specialties was challenging. However, what unites all Red Cross workers are the organization’s seven Fundamental Principles — Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity, and Universality.

According to McAndrew, who is returning to Haiti shortly, these international principles allow Red Cross representatives to fulfill their Red Cross humanitarian mission in a peaceful, strategic and thoughtful way with limited security. Working together, the global Red Cross network forms a very powerful engine for relief.

Additional Information about Red Cross Relief Efforts in Haiti

All humanitarian organizations, including the Red Cross, are racing against the clock to provide waterproof shelter to everyone who needs it before the rainy season begins in April. Initially, the Red Cross plans to provide emergency shelter supplies — tents, tarps or tools — for 400,000 people. Looking ahead, Red Cross shelter experts are working with the Haitian community to identify appropriate transitional shelter options for 150,000 of the most vulnerable people before the Caribbean hurricane season starts.

The Red Cross has delivered more than 30 million liters of safe drinking water in 110 different settlements since the earthquake. That translates to approximately 1.5 million liters per day – enough for 290,000 people. To address sanitation needs and prevent the spread of disease, 580 latrines have also been installed.

In the area of health care, nearly 33,600 people have been treated by Red Cross health care facilities and mobile teams. The American Red Cross has also donated more than 900 units of blood for earthquake survivors. In partnership with the Haitian government and UN agencies, approximately 60,000 people have been vaccinated, including against measles.

The Red Cross also has the unique responsibility and expertise to help reconnect separated families in Haiti. Caseworkers are helping people register at the official family linking Web site, place phone calls to loved ones abroad and find family members scattered throughout different settlements in Port-au-Prince. So far, nearly 33,000 people have been assisted in this way.

Working with the Greater Los Angeles Red Cross chapter since September 2009, eight Calif. Safe Corps-AmeriCorps members have trained more than 7,000 Southern California residents to prepare for and respond to disasters.

The Calif. Safe Corps program, which began in 2002, is a national AmeriCorps service program that focuses on the safety and preparedness of California residents.

Members commit to work with the Red Cross for 10 and a half months providing preparedness education presentations, teaching CPR/First Aid and conducting disaster training courses to Red Cross volunteers.

In addition, members work with Red Cross departments supporting a variety of assignments, including client casework, volunteer orientations, mentoring youth volunteers, and preparing partner organizations to work with the Red Cross following large disasters.

Members also respond to Disaster Action Team (DAT) calls by assisting individuals whose homes are damaged or destroyed due to fires and other disasters.

Recently, Safe Corps members responded to the opening of shelters during the fierce winter storms. They staffed shelters and also worked at the Incident Command Post in Panorama City.

When the program ends in mid-June, members are confident they will achieve their goal of educating more than 10,000 residents on how to be prepared in the event of an emergency situation.

An extremely strong 8.8 magnitude earthquake has hit the moderately populated region of Bio-Bio, Chile.

On February 27, at about 3:30am local time a magnitude 8.8 earthquake hit the moderately populated region of Bio-Bio, Chile. The epicenter of the tremor was located 56 miles north-northeast of the Chilean town of Concepcion in the south of the country.

On Tuesday, March 2, The International Federation of the Red Cross made a preliminary emergency appeal of $6.4 million to all Red Cross and Red Crescent societies in order to assist the Chilean Red Cross. The American Red Cross is accepting donations in response to this appeal. This includes Chile-designated donations through www.redcross.org, through calls to 1-800-REDCROSS, and by texting “Chile” to 90999. People can also call 1-800-257-7575 to make a donation in Spanish.

Preliminary information from Chile:

Chile is a country prone to earthquakes, floods and volcanic eruptions. In 1960, Chile was hit by a 9.5 magnitude quake which devastated the south-central city of Valdivia, killing 1,655 people and sending a tsunami which battered Easter Island 2,300 miles off Chile’s Pacific seaboard and continued as far as Hawaii, Japan and the Philippines. There was a 7.7 quake in 2007, in a rural area, with two deaths reported.

The Chilean Red Cross is a member of the Chilean government’s emergency response group, which is leading the emergency operations. Outside of disasters their main focus is usually on health, especially in the area of blood donations, first aid, mother and child health and the elderly. The Chilean Red Cross also promotes the implementation of a national emergency health program and has trained emergency health volunteers throughout the country.

Southern California Tsunami Advisory Issued For Mid Day Saturday.

Today’s Chilean earthquake has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a tsunami warning or “advisory” for Southern and Central California. People are urged to avoid local beaches. An evacuation of the low lying areas of Hawaii is currently under way as a wave has been confirmed heading for the Islands.

The NWS urged residents to stay away from the ocean through the early afternoon as a precaution, though forecasters stressed they don’t expect damage. “Wave fluctuation” of 2 feet or less is possible at Santa Monica Pier around 12:25 p.m.
“The Coast Guard strongly encourages waterfront users to take extra precautions in preparation for the possibility of a surge, to include securing vessel mooring arrangements and possible sources of pollution,” according to a U.S. Geological Survey statement.

The advisory was issued after an 8.8 magnitude earthquake that struck about 200 miles southwest of Santiago, Chile.

Tsunami Updates can be Found at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center Site

Hawaiian Alert:
A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG
COASTLINES OF ALL ISLANDS IN THE STATE OF HAWAII. URGENT ACTION
SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT LIVES AND PROPERTY.

A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF LONG OCEAN WAVES. EACH INDIVIDUAL WAVE
CREST CAN LAST 5 TO 15 MINUTES OR MORE AND EXTENSIVELY FLOOD
COASTAL AREAS. THE DANGER CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AFTER THE
INITIAL WAVE AS SUBSEQUENT WAVES ARRIVE. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS
CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST.
TSUNAMI WAVES EFFICIENTLY WRAP AROUND ISLANDS. ALL SHORES ARE AT
RISK NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION THEY FACE. THE TROUGH OF A TSUNAMI
WAVE MAY TEMPORARILY EXPOSE THE SEAFLOOR BUT THE AREA WILL
QUICKLY FLOOD AGAIN. EXTREMELY STRONG AND UNUSUAL NEARSHORE
CURRENTS CAN ACCOMPANY A TSUNAMI. DEBRIS PICKED UP AND CARRIED
BY A TSUNAMI AMPLIFIES ITS DESTRUCTIVE POWER. SIMULTANEOUS HIGH
TIDES OR HIGH SURF CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE TSUNAMI HAZARD.

THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME IN HAWAII OF THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS

1105 AM HST SAT 27 FEB 2010

Santa Monica Advisory:

A MINOR TSUNAMI MAY BE RECORDED IN SOME AREAS OF THE COAST WHICH COULD PRODUCE DANGEROUS CURRENTS AND SURGES IN HARBORS AND BAYS.

PEOPLE ARE ADVISED TO STAY AWAY FROM THE BEACHES AND MARINAS. WAVE HEIGHTS AND CURRENTS ARE AMPLIFIED BY IRREGULAR SHORELINES AND ARE DIFFICULT TO PREDICT.

MINOR WAVE FLUCTUATIONS TWO FEET OR LESS ARE EXPECTED TO BEGIN WITHIN 30 MINUTES OF THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIMES LISTED BELOW: PORT SAN LUIS HARBOR…AT 1235 PM PST. SANTA BARBARA HARBOR…AT 1231 PM PST. SANTA MONICA HARBOR….AT 1225 PM PST. SAN PEDRO HARBOR…….AT 1215 PM PST.

THESE MINOR WAVE FLUCTUATIONS COULD CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS. THE INITIAL WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST. MARINERS IN WATER DEEPER THAN 600 FEET SHOULD NOT BE AFFECTED BY THE TSUNAMI

Jan 22 — With recommendations from L.A. County and City officials all American Red Cross shelters serving the evacuated areas have been closed.

The first month of 2010 brought rain and snow to many parts of Southern California forcing home evacuations and road closures as three wintry storms slammed into Los Angeles and surrounding counties.

As storms grew more severe, rocks and other debris stranded cars while flooding and mudslides forced evacuations in several areas. Of paramount concern were residents in the La Canada Flintridge area who experienced evacuations in September 2009 due to the Station Fire – the largest fire in modern Los Angeles history.

With the burn areas most vulnerable to flooding and mudslides, American Red Cross volunteers worked around the clock to staff shelters for local residents of La Canada Flintridge, Sunland, Glendale and Sierra Madre.

Nearly 2 dozen evacuees stayed at area shelters waiting for the storms to end and word that it was safe to return home. In all, the Red Cross staffed 9 shelters from Santa Barbara to San Diego counties.

As blue skies return to Southern California, the task of clean-up remains with the threat of additional winter storms likely. The American Red Cross of Greater Los Angeles will continue to monitor critical areas and work with local county officials to open shelters as necessary.

Stay Prepared! The American Red Cross of Greater Los Angeles reminds you to:

Know What to Expect
• Know your area’s flood risk. If it has been raining hard for several hours, or steadily raining for several days, be alert to the possibility of a flood and listen to local radio or TV stations for flood information.

Assemble a Disaster Supplies Kit Containing
• Visit www.redcrossla.org for details.

When a Flash Flood WARNING Is Issued
• Evacuate immediately. You may have only seconds to escape.
• Move to higher ground away from rivers, streams, creeks, and storm drains. Do not drive around barricades . . . they are there for your safety.
• If your car stalls in rapidly rising waters, abandon it immediately and climb to higher ground.
Be alert of mudslide danger
• Landslides and mudslides are typically associated with periods of heavy rainfall. In areas burned by forest and brush fires, a lower threshold of precipitation may initiate landslides.
• If your area has a history of mudslides, stay alert. Many fatalities occur when people are sleeping. Listen to local radio for warnings of intense rainfall.
• If you are in areas susceptible to landslides and debris flows, consider leaving if it is safe to do so.
• Listen for any unusual sounds that might indicate moving debris, such as trees cracking or boulders knocking together.
• If you are near a stream or channel, be alert for any sudden increase or decrease in water flow and for a change from clear to muddy water.
• Be especially alert when driving.

Feb. 19, 2010 — One month after a catastrophic earthquake struck Haiti, the Red Cross, with the help of the generosity of the American public, is delivering relief—through first aid posts, hospitals, relief distribution sites, water trucking programs and family linking stations—and helping to make life better for those affected.

In just the first month of the relief operation in Haiti, the American Red Cross has committed and spent funds in three basic areas: food and water; relief supplies; and logistical and support services.

Food & Relief Supplies:

Volunteers from around the world, including those from the American Red Cross, are actively distributing food and other supplies, like tarps, rope, hygiene kits, water containers and cooking items. So far, at least 1.3 million people have received these basic, yet life-sustaining items.

Distributions continue regularly throughout urban settlements and in surrounding areas reaching approximately 12,500 people each day.

Water & Sanitation:

The Red Cross has delivered more than 25 million liters of safe drinking water in 110 different settlements since the earthquake. That translates to approximately 1.25 million liters per day – enough for 320,000 people.

To address sanitation needs and prevent the spread of disease, 450 latrines have also been installed.

Health:

More than 20,000 people have been treated by Red Cross health care facilities and mobile teams. That translates to approximately more than 1,000 patients per day.

The American Red Cross has also donated more than 900 units of blood for earthquake survivors.

These hospitals and clinics will continue to provide medical services for the community for at least the next five months.

In partnership with the Haitian government and UN agencies, the Red Cross is helping to promote a vaccination campaign in Haiti to protect children against measles and other infectious diseases. So far, nearly 15,000 have been vaccinated.

This first phase of the campaign will continue for at least four more weeks and aims to reach 250,000 people.

Fifteen million text messages have been sent to survivors, sharing important health messages, such as how to prevent the spread of disease and safely prepare food outdoors.

Restoring Family Links:

The Red Cross has the unique responsibility and expertise to help reconnect separated families in Haiti.

Caseworkers are helping people register at the official family linking Web site, place phone calls to loved ones abroad and find family members scattered throughout different settlements in Port-au-Prince. So far, nearly 33,000 people have been assisted in this way.

The American Red Cross is also supporting Haitian-Americans and others living in the Untied States who are looking for immediate relatives in Haiti.

In just over a month, the American Red Cross has already spent or allocated $80 million of the $284 million donated to meet the most urgent needs of Haiti’s earthquake survivors (current as of 5 p.m., Feb. 18).

The Red Cross has helped more than 1.3 million people and will continue to aid hundreds of thousands more in the months ahead until the last donated dollar is spent.

To meet the survivor’s immediate needs, the American Red Cross has spent or allocated 69 percent of the $80 million for food and water; 20 percent for shelter; and 11 percent for health and family services.

As the response progresses and recovery begins the Red Cross will continue to support these priority areas and longer-term assistance initiatives. The Red Cross will continue to invest the money entrusted to us by the American people in the most responsible way until the last donated dollar is spent.

Because of the generosity of donors, people in Haiti will receive more than immediate relief – they will receive resources, support and training from the Red Cross that will help them recover and rebuild in the years ahead.

People can donate in support of the relief effort in Haiti at http://www.redcross.org or by calling 1-800-REDCROSS. Mobile donors can text “Haiti” to 90999 to make a $10 contribution.

The American Red Cross is in Haiti as a part of the broader and coordinated Red Cross and Red Crescent network.

The American Red Cross has deployed more than 100 people to help with the relief efforts in Haiti, including staff members who were there at the time of the earthquake. In total, more than 600 Red Cross and Red Crescent workers from more than 30 countries are in Haiti, supporting the more than 2,500 Haitian Red Cross volunteers from Port-au-Prince.

Each Red Cross society team has its own roles and expertise on the ground. Working together, the global Red Cross network forms a very powerful engine for relief.

This is the largest single-country relief operation in global Red Cross history. The number of international teams in Haiti is greater than the number that responded to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, which spanned 14 countries.

The American Red Cross is applying experience gained following other major disasters, including the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. For the past five years, we have been working with partners to construct water and sanitation systems, providing emotional support and healthcare, building shelters, restoring livelihoods, and preparing communities for the next disaster.

Because of the generosity of donors, people in Haiti will receive more than immediate relief — they will receive resources, support and training from the Red Cross that will help them recover and rebuild for years to come.

Due to the many complexities of this disaster – and the extraordinary needs of the Haitian people – the emergency relief phase could last up to 12 months. And because of its permanent presence in Haiti, the Red Cross expects to be involved in recovery efforts for much longer than that.

The Haitian government is working to provide shelter to all who need it. This will take a long time to achieve, but Red Cross has already begun finding some temporary solutions to support the government and addressing this complex situation.

Initially, the Red Cross plans to provide emergency shelter supplies – tents, tarps or tools – for 400,000 people before the rainy season officially begins. We have already provided these items to nearly 180,000 people, and thousands more will be distributed in the days ahead.

Looking ahead, Red Cross shelter experts are working with the Haitian community to identify appropriate transitional shelter options for 150,000 of the most vulnerable people before the Caribbean hurricane season starts.
