Bill Frazer, a volunteer with the Greater Los Angeles Chapter for nearly 40 years.
Bill Frazer, a volunteer with the Greater Los Angeles Chapter for nearly 40 years and a veteran of more than 100 disaster relief operations, passed away on July 26, 2010, after a brief battle with leukemia and complications thereof.
Bill began teaching First Aid and CPR with the American Red Cross in 1971 and continued as a Red Cross volunteer for the rest of his life. In the 1980’s Bill was a driving force in a Red Cross program that provided First Aid Stations at local events such as parades and festivals. That program has since terminated and Bill turned his attention to the Red Cross DSHR program. He started as a Public Information Officer, but quickly found his niche in the Mass Care area. He served in many capacities over the years, including shelter staff, shelter manager, Emergency Response Vehicle driver, feeding manager, administrative assistant, etc.
During his time, he traveled to such far-flung places as Guam, New Jersey, Florida, Sacramento, Oxnard, and Los Angeles to help shelter and feed victims of fires, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, and an ice storm.
One of Bill’s favorite things about his DSHR work was reading the little notes that children would write, saying things like, “Thank you for coming to help feed my mom and me after the flood.” Sometimes he would bring a few home after an assignment and show them to his wife Karen saying, “Here, look at my paycheck,” with a tear in his eye.
Bill is survived by his wife, Karen, and by his nephews and niece, Scott, Charlie and Theresa, and Theresa’s
three sons, Wesley, Kale, and Simon. Bill’s funeral was held on Sunday, August 8 in Los Angeles. Cards and letters can be sent to:
