In an average year, the American Red Cross of Greater Los Angeles responds to more than 350 house fires, trains tens of thousands of people in First Aid/CPR, and recruits thousands of volunteers. Whether at home or across the country, the Red Cross is able to help due to donations made by the community. Here are some ways your money has gone to work:
9.14.2009 At 8:30 am the Red Cross arrived at the scene of a greater alarm structure fire to provide food and housing assistance to 3 families effected by the fire.
7.27.2009 At 5:20 pm the Red Cross Disaster Action Team responded to a fire victim’s call for help in South Los Angeles. The victim had lost his home after an apartment fire six days ago destroyed the property while he was at work. His charred and wet belongings were tossed out the window and the landlord had locked him and three other adult males out of their unlivable apartment. Since that day, the four men had been living in their cars with no place to go. The Red Cross provided the men with food and temporary shelter for three days as well as referrals to long term recovery agencies.
7.8.2009 At 3pm Red Cross Volunteers responded to a brush fire that struck near the Sepulveda pass. Volunteers provided cold refreshments and snacks to firefighters and police on the scene. The Red Cross was placed on standby in case the fire threatened homes.
7.6.2009 At 12:30 pm the Red Cross responded to a hostage situation. Between 35 to 40 residents were evacuated from their homes on Monday at 1 am while the Los Angeles Police Department took control of the area. Residents were left standing in the street waiting to re-enter until the Red Cross arrived. Red Cross Volunteers worked with the pastor from a local church to set up an evacuation center. Volunteers provided lunch to clients, police and the sheriff. Residents were allowed to re-enter their homes at 5 pm.
7.6.2009 At 10:30 am 12 members of a family, with the assistance of the Red Cross, were helped in finding permanent housing after being displaced in a fire from last Sunday.
7.6.2009 At 10 am Red Cross Caseworkers secured permanent housing for four families that had been displaced by a fire last week. The case workers remained in contact with the families and assisted them in searching for available housing, negotiations with landlords and filing necessary paperwork.
7.6.2009 At 3 am in southeast Los Angeles, six people were displaced in a house fire. The Red Cross provided food and temporary housing for three days.
7.4.2009 At 1 am the Red Cross responded to two complex fires. The first one was located in south central Los Angeles where six Red Cross Volunteers assisted 18 people displaced in a two unit fire by providing them with food and temporary shelter for five days and assisted clients looking for permanent housing.
Another Red Cross Disaster Action team responded to a multi-family fire in West Hollywood which damaged a four unit complex. burning the roof down and displacing eight residents. The Red Cross provided food and temporary shelter to the victims of the fire for three days.
5.16.2009 At 2:59 am in the industrial eastside of Los Angeles a fire broke out in a 3 story loft apartment building. The Red Cross arrived on the scene of the fire and assisted 10 residents displaced by the fire, providing them with food and giving temporary housing to 8 residents who had no place to go.
4.23.2009 Last night, the Red Cross responded to a fire in Hollywood. Seventeen people were displaced and are receiving Red Cross assistance after an arson in a Hollywood home spread flames to nearby apartments. The residents managed to escape the flames unharmed including a pregnant woman who was forced to jump out the window to get to safe ground.
4.1.2009 Three disaster responders from the American Red Cross of Greater Los Angeles chapter were deployed last week to North Dakota to assist residents with flood fighting efforts.
11.16.2008 The Red Cross continues to respond to the fires in the North San Fernando Valley which has thus far destroyed 500 mobile homes and 150-200 commercial buildings and residential property. To date, the Red Cross has served 7,580 meals and snacks to those affected by the fires and the first responders on the scene.
11.15.2008 Immediately following the Sayre and Sylmar fires, the American Red Cross of Greater Los Angeles opened 3 shelters and a canteen for evacuees as well as supporting first responders at the Sylmar Incident Command Post.
10.13.2008 The American Red Cross of Greater Los Angeles is responding to the Marek and Porter Ranch wildfires. We currently have approximately 40 local volunteers deployed operating shelters and assisting first responders.
10.7.2008 In the first quarter of our fiscal year, 97 people have completed our Nurse Assistant Training program. This program is on pace to train 4 times as many people this year compared to last.
9.18.2008 The American Red Cross of Greater Los Angeles has now deployed nearly 60 trained volunteers and staff to support hurricane relief efforts in the Gulf.
9.12.2008 48 local Red Cross staff and volunteers have been deployed to the Gulf since Hurricane Gustav. We still have 38 members in the region preparing for Hurricane Ike.
9.9.2008 Red Cross volunteers opened a shelter in response to an apartment fire in Inglewood. Approximately 25 residents were displaced for the evening and were comforted by Red Cross staff members and volunteers.
