First AME Church and Red Cross Promote Emergency Preparedness

Congregants of First AME attend a disaster preparedness fair sponsored by the Greater Los Angeles Red Cross.
On Sun., Sept. 19, the American Red Cross of Greater Los Angeles staff, volunteers and AmeriCorps members attended three First African Methodist Episcopal Church (F.A.M.E.) services to help educate the congregation about emergency preparedness.
During the services, guest speaker Curtis Parker, Diversity Program manager, American Red Cross, talked about the importance of becoming a prepared congregation and recognized F.A.M.E.’s strong commitment to it’s community. Between services, AmeriCorps members distributed brochures, fliers and emergency document holders with information regarding volunteer recruitment, community disaster education and blood services.
As part of the partnership, the Red Cross will be collaborating with Rev. J.L. Armstrong and F.A.M.E.’s Disaster Preparedness Ministry to enable the congregation and community in receiving training in CPR, first-aid and sheltering.
