700 Evacuees Sheltered During Wildfires, Assistance Continues

shelter_feedingSEPT. 9 – Thousands of residents were forced to evacuate their homes during the Station fire — the largest blaze in Los Angeles County’s modern history — and the Red Cross responded in full force by opening seven shelters throughout Southern California (nine shelters statewide).

Shelters were opened from Aug. 29 through Sept. 7, and the Red Cross provided overnight stays for more than 700 people. The Red Cross will continue to provide services to individuals and families whose homes were damaged or destroyed by the fires. Assistance can include counseling and referrals, as well as emergency financial aid for groceries, clothes, rent, household items and medicines.

Nearly 500 Red Cross volunteers assisted their neighbors during the latest wildfires, providing more than 5,700 meals, 10,337 snacks, 530 comfort kits (containing a toothbrush and other personal hygiene items) and 45 clean-up kits (containing a broom, mop and other cleaning supplies).

A Volunteer Hotline was activated during the wildfires and two volunteer orientations were held for 71 people who wanted to assist their neighbors affected by the fires and other disasters.

The Goodwill activated a special disaster policy accepting used clothing and household items on behalf of Southern California wildfire victims being assisted by the American Red Cross of Greater Los Angeles. People whose homes were damaged or destroyed by the wildfires are eligible to obtain free vouchers that can be redeemed at Goodwill’s retail stores.

Numerous agencies assisted the Red Cross, including the Mexican Consulate of Los Angeles, whose representatives provided translation services at Golden Valley and Verdugo High School shelters. The L.A. County Department of Social Services arranged for non-air conditioned shelters to receive evaporative coolers and provided ADA-compliant cots for the disabled population at all the shelters.

Donors who want to make a financial contribution to the American Red Cross can make an online donation at www.RedCrossLA.org or call (310) 445-2685.
